Portfolio/ Showreel.....

The problem im having at the moment is finding things to put in my showreel. I need to render out some of the models i have made, and i need to render out the movie we made last term, as it wasn't rendered out properly last term.

Business Card to be given to Employers
What Im going to put in my show reel DVD......
Life drawing.....

The plan for my DVD how it will work.....

I am going to be using DVD studio pro to create my Show reel.

I am going to make the first page of my DVD with lots of different menus for each category i want to do.

Modeling - Will have its own menu as well, as im hoping to render out all of my models ive made so far for it...

Life Drawing - Will be images lasting for 4-5 seconds each and roll round on a box.
Stop motion
2D
3D
Animatics
N-cloth

I will then have a play all button that will go through each one in turn.

Working with Rochelle

After finding out we had to team up to pass this unit, I teamed up with Rochelle. Although she wanted to do a short film, i wanted to go with the idents, so she happily obliged.

We had a few ideas, some were liked others not so much.

In the brief we were told to do 30 seconds or more, so we had the idea of doing three idents. We wanted to make a trilogy of very similar things, However when it got to the meeting we were asked for just one, and we made it twenty seconds instead.

I like working with rochelle, she gives the work i do a better look to it with her lighting and material expertise.

We had communication by text and Email, but every thing was pretty straight forward, it was just a matter of getting it done. So we didn't have any problems.
I think i spent a bit too long on the animating and bits, as i had a few problems, so rochelle didnt get as much time to do all the lighting and bits she wanted.

I think we did pretty we together though, and we got a good outcome of the project.

Idents

Here are a couple of indents i looked at for research..
As we are doing idents, i looked in to what some looked like...... I chose a mixture of ones to get a full range and some ideas for ours. This BBC sting, is colorful and eye catching with movement, Like i would like to interpret in my ident. The CBBC ident is colorful and comes on screen in a fun way for kids, and relates to its audience. With one of the words collaboration for rave live, i hope that ours too gives off the right feel for our customers. It says something about Rave live and its students being collaborative. .

Animating

When i Was animating, i Attached the butterflies to the letters, but then i was unable to un-attach them without key framing the letters, so instead i turned the visibility off of the butterflies and put another butterfly in its place. I MADE THEM FLAP, AND TO MAKE THEM Look like they were flying, i made each one bounce up and down, as that is how butterflies fly. moved.

Anamatics

This is the animatic shown to the rave live branding team. It doesn't show the butterflies, but you get the main idea.

Keith - Flag

Keith working on a project that is about sport asked me to create a flag for his indent as he was having trouble working out how to use n-cloth. So i created a scene for him with a flag in it. he wanted the flag to really flexible, but i needed anchor points for it be able to move, otherwise the flag floats down. so i picked the two corners allowing it to move more freely. I attached it to a small box which was then animated from side to side to drag in the flag. Much like i did for the butterflies but i had a post for that.
This is what i gave to Keith. It took me a while to make it fly like i wanted as the wind was playing up, and i needed to turn the gravity of so that it could move in the wind and not be dragged down.

Let me know if any problems

youll need to just assign a new texture.

I animated the box, which is only visable at the begining of the animation at the moment.

Third file to go into particles if you need it.

Any problems gimmie a call.

The rave live team wanted 10 seconds of black before and after the actual ident in order to get it all in. So when i handed it in i did just that.

To make it broadcast ready i rendered it out in HD quality at wide screen size.

Show reel.xx

I have found it hard to get dvd studio pro to work as i wanted it to.

Some of my files are not in a compatible format for it to work in DVD studio pro, so ill have to re-render them out in the correct format.

I will also start to look at iDVD as it may be easier to get the dvd to work.

Banner_Test

Tried a quick test with a banner.
using N-cloth
Logo a bit stretched.

Butterfly.

The Rigging of the Butterfly.

I first had to model the wings and the body of the butterflies. We decided to keep the body very simple and just have the wings show they are butterflies. I used a template to outline the wings.

I then needed to rig the butterfly, so i used a deformer to get the curve on the wings across both wings, as i first used two deformers and i couldn't get them to work together, i then gave each wing two joints each so that the wings would move.
I then with the help from Keith and the book of an essential introduction to character rigging, i managed to use Set driven key and create a new attribute called FLAP to allow the butterfly to move, and that way there is only one attribute to animate, so it should work out easier in the long run.
Underneath is a short clip of the butterfly flapping. I think 6-7 frames per flap looks best to use when it comes to animate it flying. I must also remember to make it move up and down.
Problem with moving the whole butterfly together would mean that the wings would come apart, managed to fix this by going in the hyper graph editor and moving the polygons out of the parent.

Meeting with Rave Live

We had a meeting with the rave lives yesterday, and we showed them our storyboards we created. They said to us that as we had created three of very similar ones, that they wouldnt fit in with the other ones that other people were doing, so they just decided on one ident. Which was collaboration.
They liked the idea of the butterflies, and said it might also be possible to use the ident for the hologram version in Musion.
We will have to put the logo on a white background however for this so that it will stand out.

So we have decided to try make the logo into a banner, and a cloth.
The colours have to be really bright for it to work.

The idea of the fridge magnets they liked and said we didnt have to use the LUCIA text for the writing, and just make it look like fridge magnets.

Rochelle and i then decided to make the magnets stick to the background and have the butterflies fly off screen after they have brought on the LOGO.
Ill then need to work out how to make the logo be still and make the cloth not move. Which should be a simple job of key framing it.

I will be animating the butterflys as well as modelling them and rigging them. Colours will be the same as the rave live colours, and for the butterflies we will be using slightly different colors.

Story Board ideas.

We had a few storyboard ideas which we thought of.
I took things that were black and yellow to match the colours of the Logo.
This idea was of a frog jumping along, and on its back there would be the logo which will be zoomed in on.
This idea was of the same principle of the frog but using a snake and a tortoise which would be covered in the logo.
I also thought of a butterfly or a Bird flying in with the logo on the wings. We didn't tend to use these ideas as we thought that the logo would be stretched and wouldn't be able to use it.

This idea was a scramble of the logo where all the pieces would bounce around the screen and then come together in the correct order.
This idea was of balloons all rising up into the shape of rave live. Shaped like the R or L and light bulbs to go along with innovation. The balloons would all pop and reveal the logo.
This idea came from the idea of the game snake where the snake would move round and make the logo.
This is Tetris, the logo made up of blocks moved into place on a black background. We didnt use this due to they needed on a white background.
Splats were of paint that would fall up the screen and make the logo revealing it at the end. We didnt know how we would be able to create this in maya.

Black and Yellow.

I have been thinking of things to maybe use in the ident that are black and yellow

Idents

The Idents we have to do are for Rave Live Channel Two, Which is yellow and Black.
The Channel idents need to be between 10 and 15 seconds.
All Idents need to have athe capability to loop..
Use of 3D Logo.
The logo can be taken apart in tesselated shapes.
The logo must always be put back together at the end of the ident.
The logo must not be distorted.
The logo with type must never be put in 3D or used in idents,
The Dimensions for the 3D logo in Maya: The depth of the logo is the width of the tessellated shape.(the bevel frame should not warp the RL frame of the logo. -Bevel should be 4)
The colour of the logo must be matched by eye.
Logo must return to its origional shapes.
As blakc does not form in its true form in 3D the colour is to be matched by eye by altering the material properties.

Idents

We had three choices for this project.

1. Work with the third years and help with their project.
2. To create idents to be broadcast for Rave Live
3. To find an external client and do a piece able to be broadcast such as an advert for them.

I have decided to go with the Idents, and seen as we have to work in a pair or a three, I am going to work with Rochelle in a team of Two.

Rave Live Animation Brief

Project Title

Rave Live Channel Idents

Unit Title

Animation

Unit Introduction

This unit is all about the impact an ident has within a brand. Rave Live is asking you to design and create idents for their branding that help express the logo the best it can. The idents of Rave Live help the brands identity and give one of the strongest impact of all the branding aspects.

The consideration of your client and audience will be of most important.

Project Brief

This project is very exciting. It is an amazing opportunity to show off your skills at a professional level to people from the industries. Your work could be chosen and shown at the event where it will be played to thousands of people.

The core brand values of Rave Live 2010 are Transformation, Collaboration and Pioneer. These values have to be considered in your design ideas.

This brief asks you to create animated idents for Rave Live One and Rave Live Two. You are to design either a short logo ident of 2-3 seconds max or a longer channel ident between 10-12 seconds max. There should be a 3 seconds hold at the end of each short animation and logo ident and each ident has to have the capability to play on a continuous loop.

Overall we will need 10 animated shorts and 8 idents, which will be 4 for each channel ident.

Logo idents will be used on the Rave Live website and the event. Channel idents will be used as part of the channels identity where they will be played before and in-between programmes.

Please collaborate as a course and ensure that there is an even amount of animated shorts and channel idents so that we have a variety. All of the idents will be used either at the event or on our website. You may either work in teams or individually.

The Rave Live channel logos will be emailed to your tutor who will forward them to you. They will be illustrator files for your editing use. Rave Lives’ branding manual will also be send to you as there are strict rules and guidelines to follow, e.g. the shape and colour of the logo must never be changed.

Idents should be saved as a .MOV as a Quick-time file.

Submission Criteria

You must submit your files in this format:

1280x720, 25fps, best quality animation codec, automatic key frames, unchecked audio as audio will be made to fit your idents, .MOV file

Key Dates

Formative Assessment Friday 26 March

Storyboards need to be seen after the first week of next term, along with everybody’s name and what group you have worked in.

Formative Assessment Monday 5 April

Summative Assessment Thursday 22 April

Idents should be saved as a .MOV as a Quick-time file and should be saved in the Public Folder we will create for you.
